Steel weighs 7,850 kg per cubic metre. Every formula below is that density applied to the cross-section of the bar, plate or pipe.

TMT, Torkari and round bars (IS 1786)

Weight per metre in kg = d² ÷ 162.2, where d is the diameter in mm. A 12 mm bar is 144 ÷ 162.2 = 0.888 kg/m, so one 12 m bar weighs about 10.65 kg and a tonne holds roughly 94 bars. IS 1786 allows a tolerance on this nominal mass, which is why a bundle rarely weighs exactly the chart figure.

Plates and flats

Weight in kg = length (m) × width (m) × thickness (mm) × 7.85. A 6 mm plate, 1,250 × 2,500 mm, weighs 1.25 × 2.5 × 6 × 7.85 = 147 kg.

Angles, channels and beams (IS 808)

Rolled sections have a standard mass per metre published in IS 808. The calculator uses those values; multiply by the length and the number of pieces. Where a section is rolled to a non-standard thickness, the actual mass is on the mill test certificate.

Round pipes (IS 1239 / IS 3589)

Weight per metre in kg = (OD − t) × t × 0.02466, where OD is the outside diameter and t the wall thickness, both in mm. A 40 NB medium pipe (48.3 mm OD, 3.2 mm wall) is (48.3 − 3.2) × 3.2 × 0.02466 = 3.56 kg/m.

Square and rectangular hollow sections

Weight per metre in kg ≈ (2 (A + B) t − 4 t²) × 0.00785, with A, B and t in mm. The formula ignores the rounded corners, so it reads about 2 per cent above the IS 4923 tables.

Roofing sheets

Weight per m² ≈ thickness (mm) × 7.85 × 1.08; the factor allows for the extra steel in the corrugation. A 0.45 mm sheet is about 3.8 kg per square metre of overall sheet, before the side lap.
